Do you have areas of clutter in your house that drive you crazy? Is your house mostly clean with just a few parts that need to be organized or is it a hot mess that needs some serous work? Today, we are going to get started on a journey to clean up our spaces.
When you walk into a hotel, don’t you love the way the space feels? Everything is clean, all items have their own designated space and the decor is well chosen to match the theme of the room. The space is relaxing and inviting.
Do you want this same sense of peace when you walk into your house each day? Do you want to be able to invite friends over and have them feel welcomed into your space no matter how large or small? A hotel room is small but very inviting. You don’t need a large house to have a welcoming space.
Besides having a more relaxing space, another awesome benefit to clearing out clutter is that in the future, there is less to clean and take care of! This is a win-win for you! You get to have an inviting space while spending less time cleaning because you aren’t having to work with and around a bunch of stuff.
Now for our first step! Let’s start with the family room because that’s where we tend to spend the most time and if anyone comes to visit, this is the room they are usually in. Grab a piece of paper or use the memo feature on your phone and start a list. At the top of your list, write “Family Room.” Now, we are going to write specific details about what needs to be done in this room. Writing down these details gives you something concrete to work with. How do you know when you are finished if you have just written that you want to clean and organize the family room? What part do you start with? When you write down each specific task you need to tackle, you are providing small chunks of things to work on which will give you small victories. This will motivate you to keep going until you have the space that you want!
Here’s an example of what your list might look like:
- Toys on the floor that have no designated storage place.
- An overflowing bookcase of DVDs and video games.
- Clothes on the couch.
- Who knows what under the couch?!
- Things that you never knew were missing behind the couch.
- Windows that need to be washed.
- Dirty baseboards.
- A dusty ceiling fan.
Write it ALL down. Set a timer for 15 minutes and start walking around your family room with fresh eyes. We get so used to our clutter we sometimes don’t even notice it anymore. Writing things down gets them out of your mind and frees up more space to think about other things. It also shows you that your tasks are not endless. There is a stopping point. When you get everything on your list accomplished, you’re done!
Do you have a loooooonnnnggg list? That’s OK! In my next post I’m going to show you how to tackle what may seem to be a monumental project without adding another time consuming task to your already packed to do list. Whether your list is crazy long or relatively short, you will get everything checked off! I know you can do it! I’m excited to help you create the space you long for!
