I was standing in front of the Valentine’s candy two days before February 14th wondering why I had waited so late to buy Valentines for my husband and 3 boys. I joked with my husband that it really shouldn’t have snuck up on me since it is the same day every year but somehow it did…again. I love my husband and boys and love that we have a day to remind those special people in our lives how much we care about them. My heart was in the right place but my brain wasn’t.
How many times do we get to the end of the day and realize that we had an important task that we forgot to
complete? Then, we swear that it won’t happen that way again and that we will plan better next time. Only the next time, we find ourselves in the same situation again. Frantically trying to run an errand at 9:00 at night, pay a bill before the deadline passes, pick up snacks for the school party at Walgreens because it’s the only store open when you remember the class party. Or is that just me? Today I want to give you the hope that it doesn’t have to be this way!
The best thing I have done to prevent things from sneaking up on me is to write down everything that is going to be happening in the upcoming month and all of the steps that will need to be taken to complete each task. I then look at my calendar and decide when I will complete each task. Here is an example of what I wrote down in December to prepare for January:
- Decide on birthday gift
- Purchase birthday gift
- Check to see if we have birthday wrapping paper or birthday gift bags and tissue paper
- Buy wrapping paper or gift bag if needed
- Buy birthday card
- Buy birthday decorations
- Decide whether to make birthday dinner or go out to eat
- Buy birthday cake
- Buy birthday candles
- Buy ice cream
I did this for every single event that was happening in January and for the first time in a long while, I didn’t forget things and could see all that I needed to do and plan out when I would accomplish each task. I felt much more on top of things…so on top of things that I decided I was really too busy to plan out my February this way… The February that had Valentine’s Day, a trip with my girlfriends in Orlando and my birthday in addition to the tasks related to running a home, working full time, and volunteering. Of course I would remember everything…and I did remember it eventually but usually at the last minute or past the last minute 😉 Lesson learned, systems only work if you actually use them!
I have seen the error of my ways! For March, I’m going to draw up a calendar and think of all the things that are coming up so that I can make sure I am prepared. I’m going to write down each task down to the tiniest detail so that nothing falls through the cracks. I’m also going to check my list each day because writing things down once and never looking at them again doesn’t do much good either (don’t ask me how I know this). I am excited to know that March will be different than February and that I will be more organized! Each day brings new hope! Let me know if you have any planning tips! I am always on the lookout for the best ones!
